SpeakON Connectors Explained

WHY SpeakON?

Fewer cables, faster setup, few issues with failed speakers.

If you’re not well-versed in the world of audio equipment, you might not have encountered speakON connectors before. However, if you’re in the market for new audio gear or simply curious about them, keep reading. SpeakON connectors are a specific type of connector primarily used in professional audio setups, commonly found in speaker cabinets and amplifier racks.

So, what exactly are speakON connectors, and what purpose do they serve?

SpeakON connectors, a trademarked product made by Neutrik, stand as the gold standard for linking amplifiers to loudspeakers in professional audio systems. They’re also known generically as “speaker twist pairs.”

What sets NL2, NL4, and NL8 connectors apart is the number of speaker circuits they can accommodate.

Each speaker circuit comprises two wires: a positive and a negative, referred to as a “pin set” in SpeakON connectors.

  • NL2 connectors: Support one pin set, enabling one speaker circuit.
  • NL4 connectors: Feature two pin sets, accommodating two speaker circuits.
  • NL8 connectors: Boast four pin sets, facilitating four speaker circuits.
